Wellness dictionary

Little ABC for your spa-break questions ...

In their treatment discriptions, wellness hotels often use technical terms, which are hard to understand for potential guests. We have therefore collected and defined the most relevant terms in our small wellness ABC. A tip: Our wellness dictionary also supports word requests. You don't need to know the exact wording.

Foot reflexology massage

A foot reflexology massage

is a form of massage that focuses on the feet. Here, the reflex zones on the soles of the feet, toes and bridge are stimulated.

How does a foot reflexology massage work?

How foot reflexology works exactly hasn’t been scientifically proven and so the benefits are only known through observation and experience. Despite this kind of massage being very beneficial, it can only be considered as a wellness massage because of the lack of scientific proof. It is believed that the reflex zones in the feet are connected to certain organs and that they reflect the entire body. That means each organ and body part corresponds to a particular zone on the feet. In the thirties, Eunice Ingham started developing a foot reflex theory where the feet were divided into 68 zones. She produced a detailed map of the human body in small images on the feet.

Foot reflexology treatments are used in various fields.

The effect depends on the experience and competence of the therapist. For example, foot reflexology massage can help:

  • reduce stress,
  • pain relief,
  • heart problems,
  • circulation disorders or
  • inflammation.

Reflexology may not be advisable for those suffering from:

  • psychosis,
  • inflammation of the veins or
  • lymph vessels as well as
  • infections resulting in a fever.

It is also not recommended during pregnancy as it can trigger early labour.
