Eating and drinking in the South Tyrol region always means wellness for the taste buds. People immediately think of apples, prosciutto and wine. However, the cuisine is much more varied and the Mediterranean influence can be found on most menus. The aperitif is as essential as the after-meal espresso with homemade pasta also being very popular. Traditional dishes like spinach dumplings and apple strudel (Apfelstrudel) are often found on hotel menus.
Experience South Tyrol’s culture – historical towns, churches and monasteries
Due to the warm and sunny climate, the towns of Merano, Bozen and Brixen in South Tyrol are popular holiday destinations. Bozen, the capital city of South Tyrol, is rich in culture and has many historical places of interest to visit. The city is a fascinating mix of Italian and South Tyrolean cultures.
Take a wander around the charming spa town of Merano, with its pretty streets and flower-covered arches, promenades and historical buildings. The town also has a great variety of shops as well as castles and monasteries to discover.
Brixen is an ideal location to combine a cultural trip with a wellness break. This 1,000-year-old town has its own very special charm. The religious pieces of art, the historical old town with its cathedral as well as the large choice of restaurants and cafés attract many visitors.
The Vinschgau region – a culturally rich region on the western edge of South Tyrol
Located on the western edge of South Tyrol, the Vinschgau region is well worth exploring. The Vinschgau Valley lies between the towns of Naturns and Merano and the Rechen Pass.
The Vinschgau region is a culturally important area with references from Ancient times through to the Middle Ages, right up to the present day. The Waalwege walking trail that winds its way along the ancient canals and the walking paths in the Stelvio Pass National Park are ideal for discovering the region on foot. Mountain bikers will find plenty of routes. A particularly good one is the Via Claudia Augusta, which is around 80km long. This route from Mals to Merano is a relatively easy path and passes historical castles, churches and old ruins.
Lake Reschen is famous for its submerged 14th Century church, where the tower is a prominent landmark in the Vinschgau region. However, its history is steeped in sadness. In 1950, Lake Reschen used to be connected to two other lakes by a dam and when the water level rose, it fully submerged the village of Graun, resulting in its residents losing their homes. The only thing that still remains of the village is the tower that protrudes from Lake Reschen.
Churburg is a Rennaissance castle built in 1253. The courtyard is surrounded by beautiful arcades. Visitors can explore the many treasures that are displayed throughout this impressive castle. It’s also well-known for its large collection of elaborately-designed armoury.
Also, worth visiting is the tiny town of Gurns, which is located just south of the Alps in the upper Vinschgau region. Time seems to almost stop in Gurns, where there are only 900 residents. As well as its historical town centre, Gurns also has the only preserved fortification in the Southern Alps.
Visitors can also wander through the vaults on the medieval streets or discover the medieval mansions, towers, churches and castles.
