Wellness dictionary

Little ABC for your spa-break questions ...

In their treatment discriptions, wellness hotels often use technical terms, which are hard to understand for potential guests. We have therefore collected and defined the most relevant terms in our small wellness ABC. A tip: Our wellness dictionary also supports word requests. You don't need to know the exact wording.

F. X. Mayr fasting cure

History: F.X. Mayr fasting cure

While observing his patients, the Austrian doctor Franz Xaver Mayr (1875-1965) discovered that many diseases stem from chronic digestive disorders. He compared the digestive organs of humans to the root system of a tree. Like the root system in trees, the human digestive system feeds the whole body with vital nutrients through the intestinal villus. The digestive system is important to human health because it is also responsible for eliminating toxins. According to F. X. Mayr, diseases occur in modern life mainly because we eat too much, too often, too hurried or too late in the evening.

Similar to the Buchinger fasting cure, the F. X. Mayr cure focuses on the relief and   detoxification of the gastro-intestinal system. Just the ingredients are slightly extended. Depending on the patient’s condition, F. X. Mayr not only used the fasting and tea cure, he also incorporated a milk and bread roll cure. As well as cleansing and detoxifying, the milk and bread roll cure helps improve the chewing process and teaches healthier eating.

Mayr’s fasting cure always follows a strict daily routine.

Every morning, the cure starts with taking acrid salts and Glauber salt. After exercising and a warm and cold shower, the patient is allowed to drink herbal tea a spoonful at a time or any recommended food no earlier than half an hour after taking the salt. A midday rest is planned before lunch when doing an F. X. Mayr cure, preferably in combination with damp heat (e.g. with a hot water bottle and a damp towel). Herbal tea, vegetable broth or any recommended food follows. In the evening, a herbal tea is served again and if allowed, a bread roll. It is advisable to drink at least two litres water or herbal tea.

The cure is complemented by daily bowel massages, plenty of exercise and at around midday, damp warm wraps in the liver area are given. It is difficult to do the cure as an outpatient, so it is advisable to do the cure in a cure clinic. An F. X. Mayr cure can take up to four weeks. As with any fasting cure, the F. X. Mayr cure should be done with a doctor.
